The areolar approach involves the creation of an incision around the nipple. After the implant is inserted through the incision and properly placed, Dr. Pin closes the incision and the patient is sent home to recover. Over the next several months, the scar left by the incision will fade and blend in with surrounding skin.
The inframammary incisional approach remains popular among women; the technique involves the creation of an incision in the crease of the breast. This method is ideal for those having saline implants placed because saline implants can be filled after the implant is inserted into the chest, requiring a shorter scar. In the months following surgery, the scar will fade. However, the scar that results from the inframammary approach will never disappear completely.
The underarm, or transaxillary, breast augmentation method is becoming more common for women who want to avoid having any scarring on their breasts. During surgery, a small incision is made in the armpit. The implant is inserted through this incision, then it is sutured up and the patient is sent home to rest. Although the scar on the armpit will not fade completely, it is in an inconspicuous location.
